Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that results in hair loss on the scalp and any other parts of the body. People also know it as Patchy Hair Loss. It occurs in males and females of all ages but most often the onset can be seen in childhood. This common but very challenging and capricious disease affects approximately 1.7 percent of the world population and can have a profound emotional effect on social life of the patient. Compare to other types of hair loss, Alopecia Areata is most commonly seen condition in the routine clinical practice of a Dermatologist. Alopecia Areata is non-scarring hair loss where hair follicles remain live and chances of re-growth will be good with proper treatments. Alopecia areata usually starts with a small bald patch on scalp but in some cases, it can be seen on other part of the body too. Alopecia patch on beard is known as Alopecia Barbae, complete hair loss on scalp is known as Alopecia Totalis and entire body hair loss is known as Alopecia Universalis. Due to unpredictable behavior of alopecia areata, patient becomes depressed and also feel isolated. Ophiasis Alopecia Areata shows a band like hair loss.

What Are The Symptoms Of Alopecia Areata ? How It May Progress ?
The typical pattern is one or more bald patches appear on the scalp or any other part of the body. These tend to be around in shape, and about the size of a large coin. A family member, friend, or hairdresser may be the first person to notice the bare patch or patches. Apart from the hairless patch, the scalp usually looks healthy. In few cases, the patient may feel redness, scaling, mild burning, or a slight itchy feeling on an affected part. Quite often the bald patch or patches re-grow hair within a few months. If hair grows back it may not have its primary color and looks grey or white. The original color eventually returns after several months. Sometimes, the initial hairless patch re-grows hair whilst a new bare patch is developing. Often several small hairless patches develop and merge into a larger bald area. Patches on body hair, beard, eyebrows, or eyelashes can be seen in some cases. Large bald patches develop in some people. Whole scalp hair loss is known as alopecia totalis and complete body hair loss is known as alopecia universalis. The nails are affected in about one in five cases and can become pitted or ridged. When a bald patch first develops, it is difficult to predict how it will progress. In some patients, cyclical or seasonal pattern is also seen.
However this type of pattern is rare and difficult to treat. Alopecia areata behaves in a different way in every patient. When a bald patch first develops, it is difficult to predict how it will progress. However here are a few classifications of how it may progress.
A small, round, non - scarring smooth patch which can be seen on any part of the body. When a bald patch first develops, it is difficult to predict how it will progress. There is no perfect diagnostic test for alopecia areata through which we can find out the perfect trigger factors.
In a few patients of alopecia areata, patches can be seen on facial hair like beard or mustache which is known as alopecia barbae. Compare to scalp, alopecia barbae takes more time to be healed. In some individual, alopecia barbae can be seen along with alopecia areata on the scalp.
Patient with repeated transient alopecia areata but never converts into alopecia totalis. The hair loss in these patients lasted longer than those with primary alopecia areata and sometimes associated with seasonal recurrences. In a few patients, the initial hairless patch re-grows hair whilst a new bare patch is developing.
In a few patients, complete scalp hair loss can be seen but other parts of the body are unaffected. This type of hair loss is known as alopecia totalis. Alopecia totalis is very difficult to treat however hair follicles always remain to live in such conditions so re-growth can be seen at any stage of life.
In a few patients, several small hairless patches develop and merge into a larger bald area. It could be a highly progressive phase and some of them may convert into alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis. Those patients who find the presence of regenerated vellus hairs in a few areas after few months have good prognosis.
Ophiasis type of alopecia areata shows a band like hair loss. It occurs mostly in the temporal regions of the scalp and is therefore more difficult to treat, as most medicines have a delayed action on these areas. Usually it starts from the back of the head and then spreads towards the sides and up above the ears.
In a few chronic cases of alopecia areata, nail involvement can be seen. Brittleness, fragility, and pitting of the nail can be seen in those group of patients who have been suffering from alopecia areata for many years or the condition has converted into alopecia universalis.
This is an extreme stage of alopecia areata. In such conditions, entire body hair loss can be seen including eyebrows, eyelashes, mustache, beard, and other parts of the body. Alopecia universalis is extremely difficult to treat. The prognosis will be poor if the patient is suffering from this condition for 3 years or more time.
Common Causes Or Triggers For Alopecia Areata
It's yet not perfectly understood what causes alopecia areata. For some reason, follicles stop producing visible hair, resulting in smooth bald patches that can appear overnight. Researchers are trying to determine what triggers the disease, and whether it's from within the body or from environmental factors.
There are no diagnostic tests available which can predict the onset and behaviour of alopecia areata. Although medical science does not know the perfect cause of alopecia areata, a few suspected triggers are:
What Are The Limitations And Side Effects Of Modern Conventional Treatments ?
Steroids Injections
Steroids Cream & Pills
Minoxidil Spray
DPCP / SADBE
Conventional skin doctors have very limited options when patient comes for the treatment of alopecia areata. Most popular treatment is using corticosteroids as an immune suppressants. Patient has to take steroids either oral or injectable routes. Some doctors also prescribe steroid ointment for topical applications. Steroid gives very quick effect to re-grow hair on the patches of alopecia areata but that results may not be permanent. Once patient stops using steroid, the chances of recurrence will be very high. Long term use of steroids is not recommended because it may cause serious side effects like osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, glaucoma and cataracts, weakened immune system leading to greater cases of infections, muscle weakness, easy bruising and thinning of the skin, etc. The other most popular drug is Minoxidil but it was invented for genetic baldness, not for alopecia areata. Minoxidil is less effective for the treatment for alopecia areata and it also has side effects like irritation, Itching, dryness and redness, burning on the scalp. In the severe cases of alopecia areata like alopecia universalis, some doctors give diphencyprone (DPCP) or squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE) treatment as topical immunotherapy. All those drugs are known as chemical irritants used to stimulate hair follicles. This treatment is very uncomfortable and results may not be permanent.
Meaning - Conventional treatment (like corticosteroid, minoxidil) does not have a permanent cure for alopecia and Long term use of such treatment is not recommended. In mild cases, steroid gives temporary results but in chronic cases, patients should try alternative options.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am recently diagnosed with alopecia areata. What should I do ? Will it convert into alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis ? Is alopecia areata contagious ? Will it spread to other family members ?
Unfortunately the behaviour of alopecia areata can be variable for each individual. When a bald patch first develops, it is difficult to predict how it will progress. There are no diagnostic tests available which can predict whether it will convert into alopecia totalis or universalis. Alopecia areata is not a contagious or an infectious disease. It cannot be passed from one to another. As per Dr. Rohit's clinical experience, one should keep following points in mind.
- For first 6 months, No treatment is best treatment. Let your immune system fight to grow hair naturally. 50% cases of mild alopecia areata are recovered without any treatments.
- Don't take aggressive treatment like steroid injections in initial stages of alopecia areata. One may get quick results with using steroids but the chances of relapse will be very high when patient stops using steroids. Steroids will suppress your natural immune system which may cause more complications in future.
- Try to find out the cause or trigger factor. Stress and Thyroid are known trigger factors but in many cases, it can be idiopathic (no reason found) condition. Improve your eating habits which can boost your immune system.
- Remember that hair follicles always remain live in alopecia areata and in most cases, it is completely reversible types of hair loss. Only 2% to 5% patients converted into extreme stages like alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis.
- There is nothing like a rapid cure for alopecia areata. If you follow any treatment, it may take few months to re-grow hair. In few chronic cases, this may take years for complete recovery.
- Alopecia areata is an idiopathic medical condition so there is nothing like a 100% guaranteed treatment as well. Dont take unnecessary vitamin pills or other placebo oral pills to fight with alopecia areata.
Someone told me to apply garlic, onion or jamalgota seeds on affected areas of alopecia areata. Will it help ?
We recommend not doing such experiments because sometimes it may destroy hair follicles and the condition may convert into scarring alopecia.
Jamalgota (croton) is poisonous seed and causes lot of irritation and even blisters. They all work in much the same way as mild skin irritants. Modern version of these types of treatment approach is using DPCP treatment or Anthralin.
Someone told me to shave off entire scalp and then I will get new hair on alopecia areata patches. Is it true ?
No, it is not true. If you remove the hair from the entire scalp, it will not help to re-grow your hair on alopecia areata patches.
If you shave off your scalp; the size of falling hair will be smaller but it will not stop the progress of the disease. Alopecia areata is known as an autoimmune disease and progress depends on how your immune system is weak.
What about extensive alopecia areata where greater than 50% hair is lost? Will Dr. Rohit's topical Natural treatment help in such conditions?
Dr. Rohit's Natural treatment definitely helps in such a group of patients where greater than 50% of hair is lost due to alopecia areata. The success ratio is high compare to other treatments; however, the duration of the treatment varies from person to person. Some patients got faster recovery but some took a long time to get full recovery. Results of natural treatment can be seen after the completion of 9-12 months of treatment. Those patients who had been treated with long-term steroids always get delayed results.
I am a patient of alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis. Will Dr. Rohit's topical natural treatment help ?
Alopecia totalis (or universalis) is known as extreme stage of alopecia areata and very difficult to treat. We recommend trying natural therapy for minimum 12 months for those patients who are newly diagnosed with alopecia totalis or universalis. After completion of 12 months treatments, if patient finds some positive results, we recommend to continue the treatment for minimum 5 years. However if patient does not find any results after completion of 12 months, we recommend to stop the treatments. We do not recommend natural therapy for those patients who have had long history of alopecia totalis / alopecia universalis since last 3 years or more time.
Alopecia Areata is known as auto immune condition. How can it be cured without any oral medication? How does external natural treatment help?
Alopecia areata is completely mysterious and unpredictable medical condition. Modern medical science believes that patient's own immune system mistakenly attacks a part of your body which temporary does not allow hair to grow. However perfect etiology is yet not known. There is nothing like a 100% perfect cure or any oral medications available for alopecia areata. Many vitamin pills which are used by the conventional doctors are placebo treatments only.
The concept of Ayurveda is totally different which does not believe in treating the symptom. If you improve your immune system with proper life style and food habits, maximum health issue can be solved. Now a day, higher stress has also became main trigger factor alopecia areata. Yoga and Pranayam are best to reduce the stress. Ancient Ayurveda books have described many topical natural treatments for alopecia areata. Using these concepts, Alopecia Treatment Center has successfully treated global patients of alopecia areata. The center has proved that topical natural treatment is highly effective, 100% safe and recurrence rate of the disease is very low. However the exact pharmacological action of these herbs and oils are not yet known.
If I start Dr. Rohit's natural treatment, when will I see the result ? What will be the duration of the treatment?

The perfect duration of the treatment for complete recovery could be variable for every individual. This could be minimum 12 months to few years.
Once I start the treatment, will it immediately stop progress of alopecia areata ? Is it normal to get new patch even though I am under any treatment?
If alopecia areata is in active and progressive stage, no treatment can stop it immediately. There are chances of new patches or progress of alopecia areata even though you are under any treatment. Don't get worried and continue the treatment.
With the help of your natural treatments, I have completely recovered on bald patches. Should I stop using the products?
We recommend not stopping our treatment till it is recommended to do so. Our center will guide you to discontinue the treatment step by step. The effect of the treatment hinders if the patient stops using the products immediately after recovery.
